Dundas Dynamo Tournament, Dec 2-4

Dec 2, 2011

Friday, 6:00pm vs. Dundas Dynamo, L 16-40

This was the team's first game together this year and all the girls were present and eager to play.  They worked hard and gave their best effort.  Coach Scanlon and Coach Dee encouraged the girls throughout the game.  Unfortunately, Coach Mike was sick and couldn't be at the game.  This was a good start to the season and we're looking forward to watching the girls grow together. The final score was 40-16 for Dundas.

Saturday, 12:30pm vs. Halton Hills Hoosiers, W 43-26

Everyone was back and ready for the next game against Halton Hills, a team we have not played in previous years. From the start, the girls were in control of the game. They moved the ball around quickly and were able to penetrate the defense resulting in many baskets from all the girls. By half time, they were already up 25-14 and they retained the lead throughout the second half. This win put the team in second place in their pool.  It was good to have a healthy Coach Mike back on the bench.  After the game, most of the players and many parents enjoyed a nice meal at East Side Marios. Conversation was lively and everyone enjoyed the salads and soups.

Saturday, 5:00pm vs. Newman Youth, L 23-53

The third game was played against the first-place team from Pool B. Newman got out to a quick lead in the first quarter.  Lightning got into foul trouble in part because of inconsistent calls.  By the end of the first half, Newman was up 32-10.  In the second half, the girls started stronger but were not able to close the gap.

Sunday, 9:00am vs. ABC Magic, W 45-18

The team was ready bright and early Sunday morning for their last game of the tournament. Ancaster jumped out to a 4-1 lead but the girls came back quickly and took control of the game. Defensively, they held Ancaster to only three points in the second quarter and by the end of the first half, the girls were leading 20-8.  Our girls were just as strong in the second half, holding Ancaster to just one point in the third quarter while continuing to score points. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 33-9 and the final score was Lightning 45, Ancaster 18.

After the game, Coach Scanlon brought out some cupcakes that he made to celebrate his birthday (well, maybe Liz made them). That was a good way to celebrate the win as well.

It was good to see the girls come together and finish the tournament with a commanding win. Congrats to the coaches and players on a successful tournament.  We are all looking forward to the rest of the season. Go Lightning.
