Lightning Takes Home the Gold
On Friday Feb 10 the Major Atom girls headed to Guelph for the Phoenix Tournament.
They met Guelph Friday night and played a fantastic game. Some new fancy footwork was introduced at the foul line – entertaining and accurate, what more could we ask for? The long pass was a succes and was used beautifully! Well done girls for staying on top of Guelph and finishing with a strong win 37 – 29.
Day 2 saw the girls meeting Orillia Lakers. The girls had a slow start, but a big finish. A few great break aways got the momentum going in this game. The defence and the intercepting was awesome and shut the Lakers down. By the end of the 6th set the girls had a good lead and finished with a 50 – 30 win.
Day 3 had an early start against Etobicoke Thunder but that didn’t seem to bother the Lightning girls! With hairspray in place – the girls came in very strong and held on to their lead throughout the game. Both offensively and defensively the team was strong and they deserved the 43 – 29 win!
Off to the finals for an intense match up against Guelph Phoenix. Both teams came in aggressive and hungry for that gold medal. The girls held strong in a very crowded gym and stayed tight with Guelph the whole match – never more than a 4 point spread! Again our Major Atoms were amazing and pulled off some of the cleanest hook shots ever…SWOOSH! It was an exciting finish to a great weekend – 43 – 37 win for KW Lightning Gold Medal Winners.
Well Done to all the girls and coaches - You all look fantastic in gold.
Brantford CYO Tournament
Januray 20 – 22, 2012
The Major Atom girls headed to Brantford for the Falcons “AAA” Tournament.
Friday’s game against Brantford was very competitive. A very strong defence the first set kept the Falcons from scoring. It was a terrific start to a game where the girls worked hard and gave their best effort. L 23 – 11
Both games Saturday were well played. The girls showed a tremendous amount of spirit throughout the day and brought the energy to the court. The first game of the day ended with a disappointing loss to Scarborough – 54 – 8. In game two the girls met Oakville Venom. The girls showed tremendous skill and energy, and played a great game. L 43 – 18.
With quite a good break between games, the team organized one of its famous potluck lunches! The girls dined on everything from salads to cold cuts – where did all those olives go? It was a great time to sit back, relax and chat.
Once again coaches and players – Great Job!!
St. Catherine’s Rebels : Tournament
Friday Dec. 9 vs Port Colborne Hornets
L 43 -41
The girls stayed on top of this game right up until the end – it was a great effort girls!
Saturday Dec. 10 vs Caledon
L 33 – 25
New team for the girls – and the play was a challenge. It was certainly the most aggressive style the girls have come across and spent alot of time on those foul shots! Considering all the injuries we accumulated – all the girls showed a great amount of sportsmanship and tenacity!
Saturday Dec. 10 vs Flamborough Fire
W 27 – 21Great finish to the tournament. The girls got out to a quick lead in the first half of the game. Flamborough worked hard to close the gap but couldn’t quite keep up. Great Job Lightning.
It was great to see the girls really come together and finish the tournament with a win. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!
Exhibition Game #2 in Oakville
The evening of December 7 saw the girls heading out to Oakville to take on the Oakville Vytis team. Once again, our girls rose to the challenge and were victorious. The first 4 sets were strong for Lightning and the girls finished their first half well ahead of Vytis. After the break, Vytis really brought their game and closed the gap. It made for an exciting 2nd half but it wasn’t enough and the Lightning girls finished on top. Congratulations to all the girls on a game well played!
Season Kick Off Social
The girls got together to do some bonding and to support the Warrior’s Think Pink Weekend!! Our Lightning girls took part in designing some great signs to cheer on UW’s women’s basketball team as they took on Queen’s. Between the cheering, the photo booth and the half time activities – not to mention an intense game – it was fair to say the whole team was tickled….um…PINK by the experience. Even the Warrior loss (52-83) didn’t dampen the spirit shared that night.
Big THANKS to our social director for organizing – what’s next??
The Battle of Stoney Creek – Boy Was It A Battle!
November 25 – 27
The Major Atom girls competed in their first tournament of the season this weekend – the Battle of Stoney Creek.
Friday night saw the girl’s first challenging match of the weekend against Oakville Venom. After a real show of skill and tremendous defence the girls walked away with a loss 25 – 43.
Saturday’s competition was just as daunting but the girls really stepped up their game. Although a slow start to the game against Hamilton’s Blessed Sacrament, by the third set Lightning had struck and the girls never looked back. After double overtime, the battle was won and the Major Atom girls were victorious with a well deserved 37 – 35 win.
A delayed start to the last game of the day – saw a very late evening for the team. The girls came out very strong and for a couple of sets were leading. But the great competition brought by Scarborough Blues was eventually successful. Lightning managed some great defensive plays throughout the game and kept a lid on the Blues lead – they were ultimately defeated 27 – 57.
The single win wasn’t enough to get the team through to the finals but overall – the girls challenged and learned from all their opponents. Your coaches, parents and fans are all very proud of you!
Major Atom Starts Season With Win Over Guelph Phoenix
Congratulations to our girls on their first exhibition game of the season – when taking on the Guelph Phoenix on Tuesday November 15, they showed some impressive skill and amazing teamwork throughout the eight shifts. It was an exciting night and a sweet victory for Lighting who came out on top with a 39 – 27 win. Thanks to Guelph for hosting this game and of course all the Lightning parents for getting the girls there!
Way to Go Lightning!!
